Construction of a New Factory Was Commenced in Akmenė by VMG Group

2019-02-15

One of the world’s most powerful and state-of-the-art particleboard factories will be launched in Akmenė Free Economic Zone early next year.
The new factory of VMG Group that is under construction in Akmenė Free Economic Zone (FEZ) will be not only one of the most powerful factories in Europe, but also one of the most modern ones in the world. The annual production capacity of the factory will be 600,000 m3. Such production capacity will be achieved with the help of German Siempelkamp production equipment that is currently being implemented in the facilities of the factory. This exclusive equipment will enable us to be among the first manufacturers of 3 mm thin particle boards in the world. Prospects are that the new boards can replace the heavier particle boards, production of which requires more raw materials.
140 employees will be employed in the new factory. Most of them will be operators of fully automated machinery of production lines. Namely equipment and production capacity make an automated factory stand out among others.
According to plans, the new factory of VMG Group, the construction of which will cost 140 million euros, will commence its activities in 2019. Later on, a furniture factory comprising 60 million euros investment will be built nearby.
Lithuanian Railways that are cooperating with VMG Group will finish laying a new railway track from Alkiškiai–Karpėnai to Akmenė FEZ, where the company will also install an access track, by 10 September. Production wood and timber will be transported by rail to the factory not only from Lithuania, but also from the neighbouring Belarus.
Akmenė district was chosen in order to contribute to the development of regions and reduction of the gap between large cities and districts in Lithuania. Wood producer cluster was established together with other wood processors, educational and scientific institutions, forest owners and municipalities last year. Our wish is to have as much high added value wood products produced in Lithuania as possible. The more wood and timber is processed in Lithuania, instead of transporting it to other countries, the bigger the benefit to our country. This contributes to the creation of jobs, collection of taxes by the state and growth of local businesses.
