VMG Energy has begun implementing a 15 MW battery energy storage system (BESS) with a storage capacity of 30 MWh at VMG Industrial Park in the Klaipėda District. The project is part of the park’s ongoing energy infrastructure development, aimed at meeting the evolving needs of businesses and investors.
During the first phase, the battery system will operate in the electricity balancing market. It will store electricity when supply exceeds demand and release it back into the grid when demand increases or additional capacity is required. In this way, the system will support grid stability and provide flexibility services to the transmission system operator.
The BESS is expected to participate in frequency regulation and reserve markets, where energy storage solutions help maintain the real-time balance of the electricity system. As the share of renewable energy continues to grow, such systems are becoming an increasingly important part of the energy infrastructure, enabling more efficient management of fluctuating electricity flows.
According to Diana Gedminčė, Head of the Real Estate Department at VMG Energy, energy readiness is becoming one of the key factors determining the competitiveness of industrial locations.
“Investors today consider not only the availability of power capacity, but also whether the infrastructure can ensure a reliable energy supply and adapt to growing demand. Energy storage solutions are therefore becoming an essential part of modern industrial infrastructure,” says D. Gedminčė.
VMG Industrial Park can currently provide investors with up to 60 MW of power capacity, with further expansion planned in the future. The battery energy storage system forms part of a broader energy infrastructure development programme designed to enable more efficient capacity management and strengthen the park’s overall energy readiness.
In the future, the system could also be used to meet the needs of companies operating within the park. This would enable more flexible electricity consumption management, support the integration of renewable energy sources and contribute to the development of a more integrated energy infrastructure across the industrial site.
The project marks another stage in the development of VMG Industrial Park’s energy infrastructure, supporting the efficient use of available power capacity and ensuring that the park remains well prepared for the future needs of industry while offering competitive infrastructure to investors.
