4 October 2024 – an important milestone for Sakuona, one of Europe’s largest producers of curved laminated plywood, as it celebrates its 30th anniversary. As the company continues investing in automation solutions, it’s also creating high-value jobs in the Klaipėda district, strengthening the local economy.

In 2023, Sakuona generated revenues of €71.5 million and is a key supplier of bed frames, bases and chairs to major players in the furniture market. Last year, the company invested around €1.5 million in automating its production processes, increasing production capacity and focusing on waste reduction. According to Sigitas Paulauskas, sole shareholder and investor of VMG Group, these investments are helping the company adapt to rapidly changing market demands.

“From the very beginning, we’ve prioritised growth, investing more than €20 million to date. Now, as we enter our fourth decade, we’re moving forward with new ambitions,” he said.

To strengthen its competitive advantage, Sakuona plans to diversify its range of laminated plywood and veneer products. This product expansion is expected to enrich Sakuona’s portfolio and ensure that it remains a versatile and resilient player in the furniture component market.

Currently employing around 600 people, Sakuona expects to increase employment in the Klaipėda region as production increases with these new projects.

He highlighted the challenge of finding skilled workers in the region and the importance of offering attractive conditions to retain talent.

“We’re proud to create meaningful job opportunities here in Lithuania. Since we started, more than 5,000 people have worked at this factory alone.”

Founded in 1994, Sakuona initially operated on a much smaller scale, manufacturing basic items like birch veneer bed parts with a limited regional clientele. The first decade presented its share of challenges, including two fires that caused significant setbacks and required costly rebuilding efforts. However, the company persevered and grew into a key player in Lithuania’s manufacturing sector and a major exporter, with its products now reaching 52 countries worldwide.

In recent years, Sakuona has made strides in sustainability. Last year, the company installed a 1.3 MW rooftop solar power plant to reduce its environmental footprint. Additionally, it has obtained certifications that meet high standards of quality and environmental responsibility. In 2024, Sakuona completed a major biofuel facility upgrade, further underscoring its commitment to green energy and efficient production practices.
