A 29.5 MW wind farm has commenced operations in the Akmenė Free Economic Zone (FEZ), with VMG Energy actively contributing to its development.
This is the only project of its kind in Lithuania where all generated green electricity is dedicated exclusively to industrial companies operating within the Free Economic Zone, thereby directly strengthening the sustainability and operational stability of local industry.
“All electricity generated is supplied exclusively to companies operating within the Akmenė FEZ territory through the distribution facility managed by UAB Akmenės laisvoji ekonominė zona. As a result, the energy does not enter the public electricity grid and is used solely to support industrial activities carried out within the Akmenė FEZ,” says Lina Mockutė, Head of Akmenė FEZ and UAB Akmenė bona, highlighting the project’s uniqueness.
The wind farm consists of five wind turbines, each with a capacity of 5.9 MW, with projected annual generation of approximately 103,000 MWh. The total value of the project amounts to EUR 65 million, of which EUR 44.25 million is a loan from the national development bank ILTE, EUR 12.7 million is an investment from the Sustainable Energy Fund I established by UAB Braitin, and the remaining amount represents investments from other shareholders of UAB Akmenė bona.
From the earliest design stages through to infrastructure readiness for electricity generation, VMG Energy, a company belonging to the international VMG Group, actively contributed to shaping the project’s vision, technological solutions, and development process. The company collaborated with electricity energy project developer UAB Greenerga and asset management company UAB Braitin.
“Projects of this scale can only emerge when a strong vision is supported by partner trust and investor determination. This wind farm is a long-term investment in industrial competitiveness and regional green energy generation, reducing manufacturing companies’ dependence on market price fluctuations,” says Petras Leknius, CEO of VMG Energy.
