AB Klaipėdos mediena, a company of the VMG Group, will soon begin works to increase the amount of heat supplied to Klaipėda’s district heating network. The project involves the reconstruction of the existing heat supply pipeline, whose current technical capacity limits higher heat transfer volumes.
Heat Supplied on a Market-Based Model
At present, Klaipėdos mediena supplies around 5% of the total centrally generated heat energy delivered in Klaipėda. Following the pipeline expansion, the upgraded infrastructure will technically enable this share to increase to approximately 8–10%, depending on seasonal demand and market conditions.
“By expanding the pipeline, we aim to fully utilize the existing heat production infrastructure and ensure that heat generated during the ORC process can be sustainably used for heating Klaipėda’s residents. This development will allow us to significantly increase the volume of heat already being supplied,” says Ovidijus Gibieža, Project Manager at VMG Energy.
A Unique ORC Solution in Lithuania and a Contribution to Urban Energy Stability
While ORC (Organic Rankine Cycle) technology is already used at other sites in Lithuania, the installation operating at Klaipėdos mediena stands out due to its technological approach. Here, thermal energy is transferred via thermal oil rather than water, as is typical in most biomass boiler plants. This solution enables the recovery of heat generated during the industrial process, which is first used to produce electricity and subsequently supplied to the city’s district heating system.
The pipeline expansion works are scheduled to begin in spring 2026.
